Phrases may function as nouns, verbs, or modifiers. Phrases
13
1
may be located anywhere in a sentence, but when they
13
1
begin a sentence, they are usually followed by a comma.
13
1
Like dependent clauses, phrases cannot stand alone. If a
13
1
phrase is not part of a complete sentence, it is a sentence
13
1
fragment.

Phrases tend be confused with dependent clauses because
13
1
neither of them forms a complete thought. Remember, a
13
1
clause will have both a subject and a verb. A phrase will
13
1
have one or the other but not both.
